I took my father guitar shopping a year or two ago. Two things about my dad, he’s not a big gear nut, and he doesn’t spend over 500 bucks, or at least he hasn’t for the last three decades when it comes to instruments. However, he knows exactly what he’s looking for. I was a good wingman while shoppingwith him. Basically had him sit down and just kept handing him guitars, (entry level DeAngelicos, Gretsch, and Epiphones). I strumed this guitar once, and said “Oh, Dad I think you’re gonna like this one“. It was extremely light, and it rang out beautifully, just strumming it acoustically. It had the vibe that someone like my dad who plays jazz could dig. Sure enough, he came home with it 30 minutes later. Having said that, I have mixed feelings about this guitar. It sounds like something that would be priced way higher… But I found the frets to be terrible, and the shape of the neck was weird to say the least. Almost a V shape. I own the real deal, and I can tell you that the tones this thing is capable of are well worth it! That said, if I owned one, I would immediately changed some things starting with the fretwork. My father doesn’t do a lot of bends, so the grittyness I was feeling, didn’t bother him at all.

G&L, a great choice. With options to step up to Shabat, Tuttle, Suhr, etc as well for $3.5k - $5k.... I would not consider Fender CS with Fender prices and significant quality inconsistencies.

Noise is the reason I switched to a boss katana for live playing. The noise floor is so low Its almost non existent. The problem is now when I plug into a tube amp the noise drives me crazy.

Strangely enough most black musicians hated jimi hendrix's lame ass guitar playing and singing. The Isley brothers fired jimi hendrix back in 1964 because they said the " NIGGA" show's off too much. Muddy Waters and BB King told J .Hendrix to take a hike too… for the same reason. jimi hendrix had a real bad problem showing off. jimi hendrix was really not a very good guitarist at all. hendrix just loved to show off and that is all.

I have the Digitech RP500, RP355 and BP355. I like the way the RP500 is laid out, it’s very user friendly. I’ve heard the amp models are really good and some of the most realistic available on the BOSS. They’re not spectacular on the Digitech but not the total worst either-however, the reverb and the effects are great plus other features. I have wanted to try an ME-80 for a while even if I might not buy one. Now the ME-90 sounds like a good unit, but I’m not sure about what the difference is between the two. You’d think that on the newest ones they’d have more reverbs than just spring, room and hall but I know that’s pretty much all you need. The Digitech has Lexicon Reverb which is top notch and has added plate, ambiance and studio to the normal ones. I won’t buy units that have the little window plus requiring you to scroll through banks to change a tone or gain knob-that’s what’s good about the Digitech. With the Digitech to get to different things you hit a button and go up or down into the category you want and then push the knobs to change more adjustment. Even though the Digitech is easy to use, the ME-90 looks better because it’s got total knobs for everything all laid out without having to push any buttons or scroll. I have lots of boutique pedals but if I was a young person on a budget I would not be afraid of the ME-90 especially because people had told me the amps are realistic and I assume the effects are too. Thanks for a great video.

My very first guitar was a super Strat made in Indonesia in the late 90s. I threw hotter pick ups in it 10 years later and that’s still my favorite guitar. I have foolishly purchased a couple of up to $2000 guitars and nothing can come close. The more expensive the guitar, the crappy the experience. I asked my guitar professor in college about playing left-handed guitar and he said that everyone should play right handed because the quality of instrument will never be even close to comfortable. Because of an upper extremity injury, I actually gave left-handed guitar playing shot in my professor was right and I am convinced that no human being actually ever tried to play an instrument that was going for thousands of dollars.

I actually used a THR10X for gigging when I was first starting out believe it or not. It might have been small, but it could pump out some serious tone! One venue I played at literally just mic’d it and it sounded incredible. If anything, Yamaha always makes good gear no matter the price!

It's not the guitar that plays the musician. The musician plays the guitar. If the guitar is made well with good components, hardware and fits your body and hands there is no reason it shouldn't be played by you. If it meets all your criteria for comfort, ease of playing and sounds good to you it's the right guitar.

I was a snob against solid state a long time. It came from my 90s practice amps. I'll still take a tube over it but, positive grid and quilters are imo pretty great. The grid is there for you to spend money on tone packages but, you don't need to. Guitar playing tech is really great in 2024. A 2024 "practice amp" can be mic'ed or plugged in and blow your mind.

Beginner here (4 months in). After a month of picking up the instrument, I decided to take a crack at this song. It took me 2 weeks just to learn the first strumming pattern, another week for the one on the break, and another week for the rest of the song. Anyone asks me which Oasis song is the easiest to learn, I'm redirecting them to Falling Down.

So my first Strat I got in 2008, it was a cheap squire. I've since replaced almost everything in it that isn't the body itself, the neck, the pickups, the bridge, the tuners, etc... It has a lot of sentimental value since it was my first electric. With the mods it actually sounds and plays pretty good. My first fender on the other hand was a player series ssh. I'm mostly a Les Paul player so I thought the hum bucker bridge would be more of a preferred sound for me. Not really a fan of a single coil bridge pickup on a Strat. I had a different problem with this guitar though, it barely resonates. Idk how to describe the sound except maybe like a sponge, it absorbs everything I put into it and doesn't give anything back, I gotta crank the gain to get it to sustain, and by that point it just sounds clanky. At least compared to the les Pauls and ES guitars I own, it feels like it has no sustain. I ended up barely playing it compared to my other guitars and eventually I sold it just due to not enjoying it. I also have a John Mayer SE guitar that I really like. Otherwise I'm mostly a Les Paul guy tbh.

I guess pedalboards have a bit of sunken cost in them, the pedals, the board, the power supply… plus I’m a bit too old school with gear to get into the newer stuff with USB ports and apps, even having a screen on a pedal that’s not just an LCD number display is a no for me. I just want knobs and lights. I started off with a Boss OS-2, a DOD FX75B and a Vox wah, I did have a Sovtek phaser for a while but the giant size of it was a huge turn off… I did love that it came in a wooden box.

I started playing guitar in the early 2000s, when everyone still pushed tube amps and looked down on multi-FX pedals. I used a $100 Zoom multi-FX back then. I'm back to guitar after a long break, and presumably the technology has improved right, or are they the same as they were? Can anyone comment on the evolution of multi-FX in the $100-200 range over the past 20 years?

I'd shield the hell out of it! Done on my single coils Strat and my PJ Bass, definitely improved the hum noise. Is it completely gone? No, but it improved way way waaay more to be almost imperceptible. Personally I don't like the hum, especially if it can be heard while playing instead of only at rest as in this video. Other than that, your G&L seems a very good guitar and I like the HSS configuration, it gives you plenty of versatility!

Dude, thanks for putting this together! Do you prefer pedals, this board, or other "solutions"?

I’d probably pick a really nice jag over a strat or tele.

I once owned a G&L, but it's a Tribute Legacy model-a guitar that my family has owned since 2006. It was built by Cor-Tek in March 2004 (as per the neck stamp). Probably the best guitar I have, it holds a lot of mojo. It was selected by an acquaintance of my father, who was considered one of the best local guitarists in the previous town I lived in. Every senior guitar player who tried playing it said it was exceptional and asked where I got it. I believe it was a prototype before the company making the Tribute series moved to Indonesia. It has USA Fullerton pickups, rolled fingerboard edges, etc. It was quite heavy. I played it a lot, but I had to let it go for half the price to fund my mother's cancer treatment last year. A few months later, she passed away; she didn't make it. Still figuring out how to live without her.

Using a power conditioner is good for amps and your other equipment and helps noise reduction.
